Statement from eeBoo

eeBoo is a small, family run business.  I started it about 10 years ago when I had a one year old son and newborn twins.  I have always strived to be diligent and responsible while attempting to manufacture products that were beautiful and meaningful to children.

As unpleasant as a recall may be for everyone, a company that you can trust must be vigilant and responsible. If a safety issue arises, a company you can trust goes to any lengths possible to ensure the safety of your children.  A voluntary recall is a good sign of corporate responsibility and a proactive commitment to safety.  A history of no recalls does not tell you as much about a company one way or another.

In the case of the Tot Towers, the recall was not triggered by a production flaw that anyone could identify.  eeBoo has manufactured Tot Towers for almost a decade without any safety complaints.  Recently, we received two reports of the plastic lamination being peeled off and winding up in a child’s mouth.  We stopped shipping the product immediately upon receiving the first email. While there was no injury in either case, eeBoo decided to voluntarily recall all its Tot Towers in an abundance of caution.

Our Tot Towers have been tested consistently over the years, passing all safety tests. Since the recent reports, we re-tested three times in the U.S and in China and have passed each time.  The film lamination and the laminating process we use is the same industry standard used on the other similar products on the market as well as on children's board books, whether they are made in China, Mexico, or the U.S.  We have chosen to recall our film laminated products because our standards are higher than what is demanded of us, and in spite of the fact that many, many other identically film laminated products remain in the marketplace. The Tot Towers were the only product eeBoo produced with film lamination for children under 3 years, and for now we are discontinuing the line.

eeBoo has manufactured many of its products overseas for a variety of technical and economic reasons. Unlike many companies that manufacture abroad, we work, one on one, with a small number of prestigious printers whom we know and trust. We never “job out” production runs to other companies nor do we use “brokers” to find less expensive means of production.  The consistently high quality of our product bears out this commitment.  eeBoo has always conscientiously safety tested its products with independent professional testing agencies for all aspects of safety (toxicity, small parts, mechanical tests, and a variety of other risks and hazards.)  eeBoo did this long before all of the recent publicity surrounding Chinese made goods.

For our 2008 line we are scrutinizing all links in the production chain, re-testing our products, and are committing ourselves to fewer, simpler materials where ever possible, and greener materials overall. As reasonable as it may seem to do such a review, it requires a high level of commitment; we have already had our products tested. We already have paperwork that says they are safe. Choosing to retest and review our products is a cumbersome and costly process that may lead to discovering problems which might otherwise go unnoticed.

eeBoo appreciates your trust and will do everything we can to keep it.  We look forward to continuing to provide you with safe, beautiful, and responsible products

Happy New Year.
